Top 7 Reasons I Am Against Adding Fluoride to Water AND Invite Others to Join With Me
With so much evidence showing harmful effects of water fluoridation, or 'feeding fluoride' as I understand the utility industry calls it, its great to see much going on in Colorado, and beyond. The article last week in one of the local newspapers (link, below) related that Palisade, Colorado (USA) recently stopped the practice of adding it to the water supply which has some people debating if that is best, which has gotten me and others I know wanting to take action!
Aspen (Colorado/USA) is also undergoing the fluoride battle at present, I understand. They tried to remove it eight years ago and got shot down by a citizen vote, but they are renewing their efforts currently. The City of Denver, which is the largest supplier of water in Colorado, has stopped artificially adding fluoride to their water recently.
We need to keep getting the type of information I'm posting here at Lumigrate.com to the county commissioners and the Grand Valley's water providers (Ute Water, Clifton Water, and the City of Grand Junction Water) and ask them to stop spending our utility dollars on what some doctors, like Dr. Mercola, call "One of the biggest health frauds EVER perpetrated on the American people" (see link to Dr Mercola's article, and others, below.) Naturally, to the citizens as well.
Without going into the numerous studies condemning fluoride's side effects, these are some primary reasons why I disagree with the public's money being used to add fluoride to our water (from the Fluoride Action Network Link below):
- Fluoridation's role in the decline of tooth decay is in serious doubt. The largest survey ever conducted in the US (over 39,000 children from 84 communities), by the National Institute of Dental Research, showed little difference in tooth decay among children in fluoridated and non-fluoridated communities.
- There has never been a single randomized clinical trial to demonstrate fluoridation's effectiveness or safety.
- Benefit is topical not systemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 1999, 2001) has now acknowledged that the mechanism of fluoride's benefits are mainly topical, not systemic. There is no need whatsoever, therefore, to swallow fluoride to protect teeth.
- The dose cannot be controlled. Once fluoride is put in the water it is impossible to control the dose each individual receives because people drink different amounts of water
- Being able to control the dose a patient/consumer receives is critical in supplementation. Some people (e.g., manual laborers, athletes, diabetics, and people with kidney disease) drink substantially more water than others.
- The chemicals used to fluoridate water are not pharmaceutical grade. Instead, they largely come from the wet scrubbing systems of the phosphate fertilizer industry. These chemicals (90% of which are sodium fluorosilicate and fluorosilicic acid), are classified hazardous wastes contaminated with various impurities such as arsenic. Arsenic is a known human carcinogen for which there is no safe level. This one contaminant alone could be contributing to increasing cancer rates – and unnecessarily so.
- Only eight countries in the world have more than 50% of their populations drinking artificially fluoridated water (Australia, Columbia, Ireland, Israel, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, and the U.S.).
I am interested in forming a group of local (Grand Junction/Grand Valley) men and women who want to help educate and organize on the issue of fluoride. Getting this harmful toxin out of our water seems like a goal we can accomplish.
Please message me if interested, my contact information is below. Also listed below are just a few impressive, well-sourced links, in my opinion, which I selected to support my viewpoint. I hope you will take a small amount of time to review them, and consider taking action related to the water which comes out of your taps.
In Health,
Dr. Jeff McCloskey
Mardy's note: I am happy to report mid-summer 2012 that this was another step toward what has resulted in the group of four of us locally which named our group "SWIG: Safe Water is Great", we have prepared a logo, mission statement and story of the group, and we have set out navigating our way to educate people 'out there' -- locally and beyond. The three medical providers in SWIG Grand Junction, Colorado created education on Lumigrate, and then I reached out to include two medical/science experts from Lumigrate who live "beyond Colorado" too (North Carolina and Dallas, Texas).
Dr McCloskey then took the key concepts from ALL our educational pieces here at Lumigrate, after we had thoroughly discussed things over our FUN and challenging dinner conversations, and prepared a 'organization/business-level statement letter' to be used as needed in the future. I volunteered to work that into a multi-purpose "statement and story" about SWIG to post here at Lumigrate for all who come to find it.
Therefore, please follow this link to that 'key document' from our group efforts:
www.lumigrate.com/forum/swig-safe-water-great-our-official-statement
...(and I am putting a similar note in each topic we have at Lumigrate about this fluoride and water safety issue -- we have a growing number of topics, please look around if you're wanting to learn more details about fluoride and the history, topically/in toothpaste, or how we went about each step!) ~~ Mardy

I appreciate the opportunity being part of the "Grate Groove of the Grand Valley" provides. Being part of the forums here at Lumigrate.com helps educate and reach out about chiropractic approaches to health care, in my case. I'm finding that eading and commenting on other pieces, and vice-versa, creates a "virtual educational and networking/connecting tool" for our region and 'beyond' -- as far as the Internet reaches! I hope people in other areas search to find similar providers nearby as well. I enjoy doing face-to-face public presentations about health topics in Grand Junction/Valley, Colorado, USA area as part of my outreach as well. Please follow the link below to our website and call or contact us with any questions. If you don't see an upcoming seminar, call us, it might not be added to the website yet. We also offer a free pain relief test to anyone interested. This free test is an easy way for you to know if you are suffering from meningeal compression. You can learn more at http://healthinstituteco.com/
This forum is provided to allow members of Lumigrate to share information and ideas. Any recommendations made by forum members regarding medical treatments, medications, or procedures are not endorsed by Lumigrate or practitioners who serve as Lumigrate's medical experts.
Jeff, I appreciate that you're wanting to collaborate in forming a group about this important topic to our community's health. I suggest that we utilize Lumigrate.com as the 'marketing/education platform'. We could update people on what is going on with the group coming together, meetings in person, and post information which applies to it here.
Not only will it serve as a time-saving 'hub' for the group, but it might make it easier for others beyond our area in the US and beyond to "do the same" in their areas, if they see 'the process' here. Just a suggestion, naturally.
That is similar to what I did at Lumigrate.com this year for Lumigrate's Fibromyalgia Awareness Day contribution (which was May 12th), which was to create a new topic with a woman in the midwest who had been the center of a story for Awareness Day 2009, as she contacted the local newspaper about doing another story this year about what is new since the last story.
They were too busy to get the story done by the 12th, but she felt good about having 1,000 people at Lumigrate.com having read our piece/topic, which had a link to the 2009 article, thereby getting additional 'bang for the buck' from 2009. My hope is that some of those readers will say 'that's all she did was contact the editor? .. I can do that' and then we have our experts giving their input in terms of what they would like to see as part of a story about fibromyalgia today for public awareness purposes.
I know that Jim Kennedy, DDS (also in Grand Junction, Colorado, the two of you know each other professionally, I believe) is going to also prepare information, and others are interested as well from 'The Grate Group of providers" here at Lumigrate: they wanted to see what you guys prepared first and then they were going to go from there. They are NOT locals, but are scientists and doctors who are part of Lumigrate's 'Grate Group of Providers' writing in the forums. (Marc Spurlock, MD and Robin Thomas who has a background in science and medical research on one hand and as a mother of a son with life-long chronic illnesses which she has been whittling away and working back in the direction of wellness, successfully.)
There would be a substantial collection of information here I think, and we could look at doing online petitions or 'voting' and linked into it as well. Since this is such a politically 'active time', last year I added information in the forums about at Lumigrate.com to encourage people to 'take action' politically when it relates to their health.
I was 'laying the groundwork' in the past; I actually put 'fluoride in water' on my radar screen a full year ago and things did not come to fruition until now, I just couldn't get anyone on-board with me in the summer of 2011.
With the controversy over Palisade's public works director stopping purchasing/adding it to the water a couple of months ago being reported in The Sentinel (see link to article, above in Dr Jeff's references), this has 'come alive' due to concerns by workers as it is a very hazardous chemical I am coming to understand.
I'm presuming the group could potentially become one listed on Dr. Mercola's website? I'm surprised there are only three so far in the United States. I suggest people look at the Mercola.com link if they have not already/above, I learned a great deal from it. I believe Dr Kennedy has found that Gary Null's website is resonating for him so that's cool -- I have a lot of respect for both Mercola and Null, and they're well-known names in the complementary/alternative health world.
GRATEfull, I am Dr Jeff! ~~ Mardy

Contact Us comes to me, so please do if you have questions or comments. Lumigrate is "Lighting the Path to Health and Well-Being" for increasing numbers of people. Follow us on social networking sites such as: Twitter: http://twitter.com/lumigrate and Facebook. (There is my personal page and several Lumigrate pages. For those interested in "groovy" local education and networking for those uniquely talented LumiGRATE experts located in my own back yard, "LumiGRATE Groove of the Grand Valley" is a Facebook page to join. (Many who have joined are beyond our area but like to see the Groovy information! We not only have FUN, we are learning about other providers we can be referring patients to and 'wearing a groove' to each other's doors -- or websites/home offices!) By covering some of the things we do, including case examples, it reinforces the concepts at Lumigrate.com as well as making YOU feel that you're part of a community. Which you ARE at Lumigrate!
I concur with what Dr McCloskey is suggesting and I have started a new topic in this forum with my opinions at the following link, as I focus related to thyroid function and health which might generate a separate comment thread from this overview piece and it's resources/links:
