Every day I record several popular shows which I think carry good content and know are popular with the public, particularly in the US, and pick and chose which ones require or deserve time spent each day.  Today I really didn't have time, but I MADE TIME to watch Dr Oz because he had Dr Joseph Mercola on for a SECOND time.  I'd watched (and likely covered here at Lumigrate.com) the first time, and also have spoken with an old friend who was in a weeklong course about Internet marketing with him and find him really fascinating.

I'm glad I watched!  These shows, as we found out last year with Dr. Teitelbaum or this year when Mariluz Fontanez attended a taping (on her birthday, no less), are recorded weeks in advance.  So here it is within a week of what many are considering a turning-point conversation/address by President Obama related to the two sides coming together rather than continuing to tear apart, I saw Dr Oz saying some of the most wise and eloquent things on national television related to health that I have heard in recollection.

I am going to post this in order to ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TODAY to find when the show is in their area and possibly watch or record the second airing, and also transcribe the portion that I found so inspiring today:

Dr Oz asked Dr Mercola what he takes, and I hope you take a moment to read this answer and hear what was said, because there is something VERY interesting that went on in this discussion which I've seen / read going on in the Forums at Lumigrate recently related to supplements and nutrition.  And that is the words 'vitamin' and 'supplement' -- those words are two VERY different things!

Supplements are not the cure to your problem

Dr Oz asked Dr Mercola what 'vitamins' he takes and his response was that he takes astaxanthin (an antioxidant that he's newly promoting it sounds, something they focused on earlier in the show), CoQ10, krill oil, probiotics, iodine supplement, which Dr Oz commented was a very simple regimen. But it was clear that Dr Oz asked about 'vitamins' and didn't catch that he uses the word 'vitamin' in the old school way, but he really means 'supplements' perhaps?  And Dr Mercola didn't correct this or even seem to notice the discrepancy.  He went on to say:

"Our primary approach is  really to use foods, so the better question is what foods do I eat?  Supplements are, by the strictest definition, in ADDITION TO, not in place of, a healthy lifestyle.  So supplements are not a 'magic pill'."

Dr Oz then wrapped up with "I asked you today, You forced me, like you forced all physicans to think critically about what we're offering you as advise.  And the alternatives you talk about and the questions you force us to ask allow us to re-evaluate what we are doing which allows YOU to get more truthful information, so I thank you for that."  And please keep in mind, he started the segment by saying there is a civil war.

Earlier in the interview, Dr Mercola was asked about his choice to sell supplements.  He revealed that when he started the newsletter, he had expenses in the first several years of $500,000 and he was forced to look at either stopping or going to advertising or selling things.  He was concerned what would happen if he took on advertisers because it would influence how his information was looked at.  I've had to consider the SAME THINGS and opted to do the same with Lumigrate but have opted in 2010 to go with sponsorships with providers who I am extremely comfortable with and who do not have any say in what content is on Lumigrate.com.  It's truly something we are VERY aware of and am trying to learn from our elders ... Dr Mercola thankfully broke a lot of ground for us!

Link to the initial segment of Dr Mercola on Dr Oz (www.doctoroz.com, NOT droz.com, and I do encourage everyone to visit the website and watch every portion of this segment that is on their website, it's outstanding information from beginning to end, and I also appreciate Dr Oz doing justice here and bringing Dr Mercola in once to see how that was received, then back to whittle a little deeper this time.

(Note: one of the audience asked 'what about fatigue' and Dr Mercola's answer was excellent, though not an easy one if you're a person who is fatigued wanting a simple answer.  I thought it worthwhile to report on it here:

Dr Mercola said 'fatigue' is a real challenge because it can have so many reasons.  The first thing to do is seek out a qualified health care provider who can rule out some of the causes of fatigue that might be underlying factors causing it.  The most common of which is hypothyroidism, which is 'almost epidemic' among women today.  The other is to see you're getting enough exercise, eating the right types of foods, and sleeping properly, but there's no magic bullet when it comes to treating fatigue.  Hopefully, this combined with what I've included above, related to his visit to Dr Oz's show today will help you in your pursuit of appropriate information and serve to facilitate your health.) ~~ Mardy

Comment on the Civil War in Health Care:

There is no health care system that can run by the insurance companies or is a Medicare for all that is ultimately financially sustainable. In order for America to succeed we need to shift from a Sickness Care Health System to a Wellness Care Medical System.

What is your doctor's practice and what are your responsibilities?

Mardy's Note: 12/8/11: The distributor who provided this content on Lumigrate at my encouragement and with my support in the past has messaged through Lumigrate to request the content he provided be removed as he doesn't wish to participate in this 'effort' anymore. The forums at Lumigrate are a social media format, similar to facebook. That would be like contacting facebook and saying "take everything I ever commented on or posted off". Many conversations and exchanges of other providers are woven in 'threads' and that would be disrespectful to the other forum participants who gave their time and energy to participate in the 'social' media of Lumigrate's forums. However, I have changed the UserName to be Juice Plus 007, removed the photo, and am posting this in the signature and removing the contact information that is set up in the signature in order to make it clear this contributor no longer wants to be 'connected' with the posts. Additionally, as time permits, I will work to replace the content with similar but that will entail selecting another person distributing for Juice Plus. I wanted JP represented on Lumigrate because it is a well-known company based on the concept of supplementing fruits and vegetables. Also because JP reaches many people due to it's vast number of distributors; there are 10 in Grand Junction, population 50k or so. In addition to removing the information in the signature for contact, I have changed the username and email address associated with it to route to me if anyone were to send a "private message" to JP007. My first step will be to edit out any internal contact information/links to the requestor. I guess you call this an "imposter"? Grins! I hope this is a clear statement for the users of Lumigrate to view related YOUR forum area and how I manage it. After all, it is YOUR health education (and mine) I'm advocating for but Lumigrate, at the end of the day, is my website. I care a great deal about the users of Lumigrate feeling they are being treated well and providing a forum area which is a FUN place to come get valid, progressive information in a streamlined way when searching for health information our audience of consumers is seeking.

This forum is provided to allow members of Lumigrate to share information and ideas. Any recommendations made by forum members regarding medical treatments, medications, or procedures are not endorsed by Lumigrate or practitioners who serve as Lumigrate's medical experts.
