Is Fluoride Really Safe?
As a physician who deals mostly with patients with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, I deal with patients who have a multitude of underlying illnesses. Beyond the comments brought forth in the neighboring topic in this forum by Dr Jeff McCloskey, I have some issues with fluoride myself. (Found at www.lumigrate.com/forum/top-7-reasons-i-am-against-adding-fluoride-water-and-invite-others-join-me)
Since we have been consuming large amounts of fluoride (water/toothpaste), bromide (bread) and chloride (water), our country has had an epidemic level of hypothyroidism (low thyroid function). Why would this be? Fluoride, chloride and bromide sit very close to iodide on the Periodic Table of Elements. When these chemicals are in large quantities in our bodies, they displace iodide out of the thyroid, leading to low function of the thyroid gland and its production of thyroid hormones.
When we have low production of thyroid hormones, we start developing a myriad of health problems. Thyroid hormones serve multiple purposes including: The Metabolism Hormone, The Detoxification Hormone and The Master Hormone.
As you look at the obesity epidemic in this country, you might see the clues that generalized thyroid dysfunction is prevalent in our country. But the scariest phenomenon to me is the loss of the detoxification process provided by thyroid hormones. Without the detoxification of our tissues, we accumulate more and more toxins in our system, which then becomes a vicious downward spiral in our bodies. We get sicker, which leads to being even less able to rid ourselves of toxins, which leads to being even sicker.
In my opinion, the scientists need to find a way to administer fluoride to us in a safe, nontoxic, non-overload manner. If we don't, we are dooming ourselves to an extremely toxic environment with our health.
If you are thinking that "you are not having any problems" with fluoride in your water, and that you have no reason to act, you should think again.
I see the medical problems I treat getting progressively worse and in higher incidence, and I am treating many children today also. It is becoming cumulative. If we don't act soon, everyone will be suffering from the damage we have allowed to be perpetrated against us.
I will end with an old Turkish proverb:
"No matter how far you have gone down the wrong road, ..... turn back!"

Mardy's note: I am happy to report mid-summer 2012 that this was another step toward what has resulted in the group of four of us locally which named our group "SWIG: Safe Water is Great", we have prepared a logo, mission statement and story of the group, and we have set out navigating our way to educate people 'out there' -- locally and beyond. The three medical providers in SWIG in Grand Junction, Colorado created education on Lumigrate, and then I reached out to include Dr Spurlock as one of two medical/science experts from Lumigrate who live "beyond Colorado" too (the other is Robin Thomas from North Carolina).
Dr McCloskey then took the key concepts from ALL our educational pieces here at Lumigrate, after we had thoroughly discussed things over our FUN and challenging dinner conversations, and prepared a 'organization/business-level statement letter' to be used as needed in the future. I volunteered to work that into a multi-purpose "statement and story" about SWIG to post here at Lumigrate for all who come to find it.
Therefore, please follow this link to that 'key document' from our group efforts:
www.lumigrate.com/forum/swig-safe-water-great-our-official-statement
...(and I am putting a similar note in each topic we have at Lumigrate about this fluoride and water safety issue -- we have a growing number of topics, please look around if you're wanting to learn more details about fluoride and the history, topically/in toothpaste, or how we went about each step!) ~~ Mardy
"There is no one to blame. There is simply taking action!"........Wm. Marcus Spurlock, MD Dr. Spurlock presently works in Dallas, TX treating people with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Bio-Identical Hormone Deficiences and Environmental Illnesses. He has been doing this work exclusively for the last 9 years. In the fall of 2011 he opened a new health center; please visit his website, which is where he posts education beyond what is sprinkled at Lumigrate. http://www.renewedvitalitymd.com/ Through a total body approach, the treatments he and his team provide are 85-90% successful in returning patients to their previous health potential. You can see his complete vitae in Lumigrate's forum "About Our Writers" (link: http://www.lumigrate.com/forum/my-vitae-wm-marcus-spurlock-m...), and the majority of his contributions on Lumigrate are in the FMS/CFS/CPain section, where you'll see a forum which includes his name: http://www.lumigrate.com/forums/health-issuesdis-eases/fibro....
This forum is provided to allow members of Lumigrate to share information and ideas. Any recommendations made by forum members regarding medical treatments, medications, or procedures are not endorsed by Lumigrate or practitioners who serve as Lumigrate's medical experts.
Let me start by guiding people to the forum on Lumigrate.com which you and others have contributed to directly or indirectly related to thyroid: www.lumigrate.com/forums/health-issuesdis-eases/chronic-disease-management-chronic-wellness/hormones/thyroid-dysfuncti. I encourage people to go and read there and follow the information around at Lumigrate.com if they're realizing this is something that applies to them or interests them for any reason.
I have noticed that myself in my work consulting as an occupational therapist in a clinic in Grand Junction, Colorado prior to shifting to a functional advisor/consultant and establishing Lumigrate.com as a health education platform, Dr Spurlock. Particularly the increased incidence of teens with these types of chronic illnesses, I have seen that also in my networking through Facebook and social media related to fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. I had symptoms of adrenal fatigue when I was a child but at least my life did not become 'medically complex' until I was out of my 'young adulthood' and into middle adulthood. It is always hard to see people suffering with medical conditions, or anything, but it is just particularly heart wrenching when it is our youth.
I know you, Dr Spurlock, use the concept of an elevator getting increasingly burdened with weight and then crashing to the bottom of the shaft. Dr Christopher Lepisto, the local ND who generously provided his time to record a few videos for Lumigrate.com's launch in the past and answering questions in the past about these types of topics for my own understanding and to be used as education as well, uses the full barrel syndrome analogy: that video is currently on the video tab at Lumigrate.com but things might be changing around over the summer at Lumigrate.com so 'search on it' at Lumigrate if you cannot find it if reading this in the future.
I like 'the slippery slope' analogy, as I keep making headway and making it back up toward the top of the hill to wellness and then slip and end up somewhere, thankfully not yet again at the bottom like I was in 1989 when I had my onset of chronic fatigue syndrome and couldn't walk a block or climb a flight of stairs or work at my desk for the now infamous CSU/NPS Air Quality Division visibility research program administration liaison/assisting job for more than 7 hours a day. My life has never been the same since, though I did make, I thought, a full recovery and surpassed my previous health level, which was never 'perfect', despite growing up in the 'pristine mountains of Colorado'.
In the mid 1990s, due, again, to a number of factors but tripped off by as my initial CFS was by a reaction to an immunization for mumps as I had not had them and would be quaranteened from campus if one of the 20,000 students had mumps, impeding my schooling in the program by a whole year, potentially, and also chemicals from cadavaer anatomy to become an occupational therapist, I developed what appeared to be MS-like symptoms. Fortunately it was not and I became proactive once again and solving the problems. However, I did not have anyone at that time educating me about what was in the tap water I was drinking a LOT OF because I worked out a lot and was outdoors extensively mountain biking, in-line skating and hiking. In retrospect, I wonder how much could have been prevented in my extremely expensive, ongoing, health challenges by not having had flouride in the water and having had guidance on supporting my thyroid to detox with adding pharmaceutical iodine supplementally.
I wish it were completely due to what is in municipal/tap water, which it is naturally not, as it is so multi-faceted and has to do with as much about the mind and spirit having wellness as it does the body and the periodic table, naturally, but to me, this is the EASIEST of things for our society to change and it saves money for the water businesses and for the consumers related to their health, so it just makes sense to put some efforts in on this information and hope it makes an impact. Thank you for your input! ~~ Mardy
PS -- I'm adding the link to Dr Spurlock's vitae in our forum 'About Lumigrate's Forum Writers', since many people reading this in W. Colorado will not be aware of his name like the broader, national fibromyalgia/chronic illness community is. www.lumigrate.com/forum/my-vitae-wm-marcus-spurlock-md. There is a biographical and more 'vitae-like' topic by/about me as well, and others, you might find helpful in understanding our backgrounds and qualifications to be contributing as concerned citizens for ourselves and others.

Fluoride is not associated with Hashimoto's thyroiditis. But it is possible to have more than one thyroid problem at a time. So it is possible to have Hashimoto's thyroiditis and have a thyroid deficiency due to fluoride displacement of iodide concurrently.
The goal of treatment is always to bring FULL health to the area we are working on, not just focusing on one obvious problem, while neglecting the others. Thanks for asking the question!
