There are so many healthy reasons to eat vegetables that it feels redundant to keep enumerating them. But if a stronger immune system, cancer-fighting antioxidants and heart-healthy fiber aren't reason enough for some, perhaps we can appeal to their vanity: a study published in the journal Evolution and Human Behaviour found that eating foods high in carotenoids — a nutrient found in some fruits, leafy greens and root vegetables — gave them a healthy glow that rivaled a sun tan and made them more attractive in tests. (More on Time.com: Eat Veggies, Cheat Death)

"We found that, given the choice between skin color caused by suntan and skin color caused by carotenoids, people preferred the carotenoid skin color," Dr. Ian Stephen, the study's lead researcher, now of the School of Psychology, University of Nottingham, Malaysia Campus, said in a statement. "So if you want a healthier and more attractive skin color, you are better off eating a healthy diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables than lying in the sun."

People with diets high in fruits and vegetables had demonstrably yellower skin, the researchers found. But the scientists weren't sure if the veggie glow would be perceived differently than one achieved by sitting in the sun. So they asked study participants to look at 51 different Caucasian faces and adjust the skin tones to the hues, ranging from those typical of a day in the sun to the glow from a carotenoid-rich diet, that they thought looked healthiest. Many conversations and exchanges of other providers are woven in 'threads' and that would be disrespectful to the other forum participants who gave their time and energy to participate in the 'social' media of Lumigrate's forums. However, I have changed the UserName to be Juice Plus 007, removed the photo, and am posting this in the signature and removing the contact information that is set up in the signature in order to make it clear this contributor no longer wants to be 'connected' with the posts. Additionally, as time permits, I will work to replace the content with similar but that will entail selecting another person distributing for Juice Plus. I wanted JP represented on Lumigrate because it is a well-known company based on the concept of supplementing fruits and vegetables. Also because JP reaches many people due to it's vast number of distributors; there are 10 in Grand Junction, population 50k or so. In addition to removing the information in the signature for contact, I have changed the username and email address associated with it to route to me if anyone were to send a "private message" to JP007. My first step will be to edit out any internal contact information/links to the requestor. I guess you call this an "imposter"? Grins! I hope this is a clear statement for the users of Lumigrate to view related YOUR forum area and how I manage it. After all, it is YOUR health education (and mine) I'm advocating for but Lumigrate, at the end of the day, is my website.   We cannot test our way to health we can only work to prevent disease and sickness through life style and nutrition.

"Work to prevent" OR "NOT Work to Interfere"

Like the quote, Tom.... it works!

I got to thinking, in talking yesterday about the body's amazing ability to heal and how it really is inclined to health if we can locate and diffuse the holdups to wellness.  It gravitates to a state of homeostasis and if we have the time, energy and money resources to give it the best air, water, food and drink, rest, happiness, and movement.

Then reality comes along..... and ideals might not be possible.  So I like to remind to just do as much as we can that's as best as we can. Overall, every day that requires some attention and focus and then shifting each day, as our needs shift.

I was just turning my focus to the Ideal Daily Game Plan/Flowsheet which I 'kicked off' yesterday on Lumigrate.  A large part of that in my past practice when I developed it came to be when I was working with people who were having difficulties incorporating ALL the new medical 'stuff' they needed to after a sudden onset of a new medical condition/ diagnosis (such as a stroke or becoming diabetic or being diagnosed with fibromyalgia) or incident (such as a head injury or other bodily injury).

Much of what Lumigrate's users are following related to well-being has to do with nutrition, either through what they eat/drink or supplement.  It can become complicated and when conditions that interfere with your cognition and memory are a part of the condition a person has, the daily flowsheet can be a very helpful too.  Thought I'd be sure to post about it here so people might become aware of it and go look/use if it appeals.

It's in the Occupational Therapy forum (which is pretty far down in Forums, under Integrative/Parts that Make the Whole) just so you know where to locate it, and for your ease here, the link is:

Re: Can a Veggie-Rich Diet Make You More Beautiful?

Every major media outlet is telling us we need to eat more fruits and vegetables. They tell us we have a whole food shortage.

Getting proper nutrition is a goal that all of us seek to achieve. We all want to feel better and look better. We know that we all want and deserve better health. We can get there with great nutrition. We know nutrition can be our “edge”, our path to better health.

We need to know what are the most nutrient dense fruits, vegetable and Berries. How do we possible get enough of them even when they are not in season? How in the world are we going to break out of eating the few varieties that we favor?

We know that we can’t, won’t and don’t want to spend more than we spend on an inexpensive cup of bad coffee. We want to get the nutrition of a wide variety of fruits, vegetables and berries in a convenient, cost effective way. If we can’t do it as we walk out the door in the morning we know we won’t do it. That is the American way is it not?

Due to depleted soils, pesticides, herbicides and nutritionally unsound harvesting methods, the Heart, Cancer, Alzheimer’s and Dietetics Associations all now recommend 9 to 13 servings of fresh raw fruits and vegetables every day to prevent disease.

The point is that no one can do that unless they are taking a whole food supplement like Juice PLUS Orchard and Garden blend with its 17 fruits/vegetables and gluten free grains. As for the purples and reds, the Juice PLUS Vineyard blend is perfect as it has eight berries.

Now This is something you can actually achieve every singte day for the rest of your life.

Now about those other life style changes like daily exercise.  Now achieving that takes a bit more time and determination. The hardest part for me is getting out the door to work out.

Let me assure you that you and me are very much worth it. Like you I wish I had started years before I started reaching for better health.

So start today. Your body will love you for it.

99% in agreement!

I had a fun time the other day trying to explain fibromyalgia or any chronic illness to someone who was kind of a nay sayer, so to speak, but then also really trying to open up his mind a bit as well.  However, at heart, he is someone who's really trying hard to not make any progress as a person and the more I learned about him, the more I started feeling he was one who would rather find a reason it's someone else's fault or get overwhelmed by the big picture rather than break it down and look at it as a big equation.  OR, I used the example of scales --- envision two people as two different scales and each one has the same parents -- but do they get the same genes?  (No, similar, but different.)  They eat the same meals, breathe the same air, drink the same water, have the same parents, different classmates, same teachers (much is the same in childhood) and then as you get older you go in more diverse directions and .......... one scale says balanced or on the 'good' chronic wellness side, and the other tips to chronic illness.  SO, Tom's statement about wishing he'd done things earlier clearly isn't stopping him from doing what he wants and can NOW.  So kudos on that for him and all who do!

Related to the above statement about this particular product being the only way, I disagree, but I do believe it is a very valid product, an established and well known company, which has a progressive way of doing it's distribution and therefore I want it to be represented here, and I'm glad Tom's the one who is doing it, as he's given us a TON of really good information about health!

About getting to the gym, I might suggest the same method of incentivising that I suggested to someone overseeing medical care for someone with some cognitive impairment --- candy!  I jokingly say that these days, but in a way previous job, I was to bring the patient charts up to be filed by 3 or 4 pm and it was a time my office got busy with the students leaving classes and getting their errands done (as I signed them up for classes related to alcohol infractions, gave out condoms, signed them up for nutrition visits, etc.).  So 'we' figured out that the filing clerks had a stash of candy and if they started giving me a piece of chocolate whenever I got my records up there on time, it worked better than nicely complaining if I was delinquent.

Just a thought -- a glass of pomegranite juice perhaps? Wine for those who believe and partake.  .... I was 32 when I learned that trick about how to train myself to do something I was not so inclined to make happen.  USE that 3 pm blood sugar falling for good and not evil.... GRINS!  ~~ Mardy

Re: Can a Veggie-Rich Diet Make You More Beautiful?

I don't believe I used the word "only" above. But I would like to know of any other product that is safe, convenient and cost effective. I would also want that product to have the breadth and width of the science backing Juice PLUS. The institutions affiliated with Juice PLUS are top quality universities from around the world. There are lot of products that claim something but then you find it very sketchy when they try to back it up with high quality science or ORAC values.

Many people get their nutrition from foods or other products ...

... so the 1% that I'm not in agreement with relates to how people can go about getting a dozen or so servings of fruits and vegetables and the statement "The point is that no one can do that unless they are taking a whole food supplement like Juice PLUS Orchard and Garden blend with its 17 fruits/vegetables and gluten free grains. As for the purples and reds, the Juice PLUS Vineyard blend is perfect as it has eight berries."

From my perspective, Juice Plus is fruits and vegetables in a capsule (I was just at a meeting last night where a JP distributor said that a few times, so it's what came to mind) and is a product that appeals to many people.  It has a research focus to it's marketing and standards related to its manufacturing which you've shared with us in other posts and has the emphasis on the items being ripe at the time of harvest, etc.  (If I'm not mistaken, please correct me if I'm wrong.)  It also comes in a capsule -- that appeals to many people.  And we're a society with the mentality of taking supplements, which historically have been pills and capsules.

But there are a lot of people who get outstanding nutrition through the way they eat and what they take supplementally (meaning to add onto -- doesn't mean 'vitamin', 'mineral', pill, capsule .. it can be a powder, liquid, sublingual drops, etc.  So I suggest throughout Lumigrate the concept of 'choices' and the strength that comes from a psychological standpoint from knowing we have choices!

I worked recently with the team for a middle aged person with significant dementia of unknown type and cause at this point.  Due to the nature of the disease  process,  court processes have shifted decision making to others for all the 'big stuff' such as money and living arrangements and child visitation.  Which to this former professional felt like there were no decisions in life left.  But by shifting the emphasis by the team to saying 'you have a choice here' on the things on an hourly basis -- how to spend time, what groceries to purchase, what to order off the dollar menu at fast food or whether to do something nutritionally better with the dollars, I suggested that might dissipate some of the resistance going on.

So from my perspective, I can see a statement that I largely agree with and if it appears they're saying they're the only game in town -- well, this isn't my first rodeo related to nutrition and supplementation -- and I respectfully disagree with that portion of what Tom posted, which appears to me to be out of the JP marketing information they set distributors up with.  They do a phenomenol job with their marketing and it's a benefit to all of us at Lumigrate to have someone as experienced and passionate about whole food nutrition via JP as Tom.  But my responsibility to the Forums at Lumigrate is partially to keep the discussion going on things that we all find challenging about all this 'stuff' to do with health, and point out incongruencies, similarities, and as the overall motto of Lumigrate says, light the path to health and well-being.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it ... ~~ Mardy
