The Take-Charge Patient: How You Can Get The Best Medical Care, by Martine Ehrenclou
The Take-Charge Patient, by Martine Ehrenclou, is a GRATE book! Not just a 'must read' but a 'must DO!' Being released today, May 15, 2012, I hope that people consider this for summertime study and gift-giving. Graduations from high school used to be a time for me to give a set of tools that people most usually need for putting together furniture and hanging things on walls: now I might consider giving them a copy of this book! Father's Day -- plus the gift of time for organizing the father's records is another idea. Or simply purchasing it for yourself and perhaps asking your library to do so, and that way your entire community will have a copy available!
Below, I've transferred the information from The Take-Charge Patient's Facebook page, and I suggest you find them and Like them if you're a Facebook fan. I'll provide the link to the website that they have provided and naturally I encourage you to GO and interact with the website if this is of interest to you! Naturally they set you up for following on social media from there as well.
At the website, if you look at the area/tab for testimonials, you'll see that I'm among them, as is Jacob Teitelbaum, MD, author of bestselling books such as From Fatigued to Fantastic and Beat Sugar Addiction Now!. I consider Dr. T to be the 'grand pooh-bah' and author of the 'bible' which saved my career at least, if not my life, related to chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. Directly, by purchasing and reading/doing in the 1990s and some MDs did the same and started learning how to diagnose and treat the condition in a more beneficial and less detrimental way. Dr Lynn Hellerstein as well, who is, in my mind, the leading 'pooh-bah' of 'getting the word out' about how to help people's brains and visual-perceptual system/learning, with her book which is also featured here in the Lumigrate Bookshelf along with Dr Teitelbaum's, See it. Say it. Do it! I don't try to find lots of new books to suggest to Lumigrate.com's guests/users/customers; I highlight only those which I believe people REALLY can benefit from spending their dollars, time and energy. This is one.
So it is a pleasure to see us 'communing' around endorsing Martine's new book, which I hope will also become "a bible" but for all people who are using the conventional medicine system in the United States (and beyond). Taking charge of things and navigating to the best outcome as effectively and efficiently as possible. It is harder than it sounds, in my opinion, even for those with experience and that is why I am SO "GRATE-ful" for the book!
The foundation of Lumigrate.com is about patient pro-activity and I encourage people to see themselves in the central role of their health care team, as our 'You Model' graphically represents. Prior to my creating Lumigrate.com, I was working as an occupational therapist in an insurance-based, allopathic/conventional medical building in Grand Junction, Colorado and much of the time I was working with patients/people on navigating what I call 'the occupation of health care'. Anything which occupies your time is an 'occupation' (how you make your money is also an occupation which is actually specifically 'vocation'). I wish this book were available for my patients and clients in the past, and I know that I will be recommending it to essentially everyone I work with. It is a $20 investment which will have a 'return on investment' because of all the resources and concepts presented. And now here is what I have brought over to post here for you to learn more from the "About" section of Martine's Take-Charge Patient Facebook.
Live and Learn. Learn and Live Better! ~~ Mardy
One of the most important things you will ever do is become an active participant in your health care. The Take-Charge Patient shows you how. From finding the right doctor for you and maximizing the time with your doctors, to getting discounted medications and preventing medication errors, The Take-Charge Patient is your survival guide.
Six months into her research and interviews for The Take-Charge Patient, Martine herself developed debilitating chronic pain which lasted sixteen months. She saw eleven doctors of differing specialties, three alternative medicine practitioners, was prescribed twenty-two medications and endured nine procedures and surgeries in effort to find the cause of her pain.
Much to her surprise, Martine went from being an author and advocate for others, to being an advocate for herself as she learned how to be a take-charge patient by using the strategies in her new book. With extensive research, Martine finally found a doctor who discovered the accurate diagnosis for her chronic pain and ended a year and a half of suffering. From her unrelenting perseverance as a take-charge patient, Martine is now healthy and well.
Martine Ehrenclou interviewed over 200 doctors, nurses, health psychologists, pharmacists, medical office managers, medical billers, patients, and others to provide you with an invaluable navigation guide, complete with tips to cut through the red tape of any medical encounter.
You will learn how to:
-Become your own advocate.
-Create a patient's toolkit.
-Navigate the complex healthcare system with confidence.
-Collaborate and communicate effectively with medical professionals.
