MTHFR Gene Mutation and Thyroid Disorders. Methylation and Nutrigenomics. Cutting Edge Thyroid Research
Thyroid issues are increasingly a known factor related to people's wellness/illness profile, and naturally, Lumigrate's YOUsers have had, since our day #1 on the Internet in 2009, cutting edge information about hypothyroidism, one of our 1-2 handfulls of videos was about how often hypothyroidism was missed-diagnosed / missed or misdiagnosed. And frankly, most people then and now overall in the western world who have thyroid problems are unaware, though that is improving, it seems! I cannot express how much change has come from the social media world, particularly Facebook and Twitter (I stayed focused on Facebook mostly simply due to it having good results and limited time. If I could clone myself I'd have loved to use Twitter similarly!)
In our second 'layer' which occurred almost immediately with the launch of Lumigrate, we had to shift gears as the clinic didn't manifest the way we'd envisioned and everyone went their separate ways leaving the MD with a different team and different focus which also was helping people, but was not where the rest of us who you'd see in the videos 'were at'. This ended up being a great thing for Lumigrate as we had a host of experts from the US (and one from Australia early on, actually), and they were all using Facebook, were more inclined for outreach online, and related education. As I said, above, I have a big appreciation for how much that has helped people get aware, educated, treated!
Then our third layer came with the 'big shift' in December of 2012 that occurred and I simply started providing expertise from others in a faster way, so that we could keep up with the explosion of information that was now online, from VERY good providers. And we're still in layer #3; I start or build upon previous topics based on what I think our needs are for the overall YOUsers coming to Lumigrate. I like to say that I keep 'coloring JUST outside the line' -- and the line keeps moving out.
Ultimately I would like Lumigrate to be a place where open minded allopathic providers and patients who are sophisticated enough about education to be able to feel challenged in an informal and 'easygoing' way. The allopathic system of medicine will totally be replaced by functional medicine, it is forecasted. By about 2025 is what I've seen (Mark Hyman, MD's book The UltraMind Solution is a source for that type of information if you're interested, I have an extensive topic about the book and websites and interrelated and supportive information here in forums, the one about the gut.)
Naturally, functional medicine is the type of medicine the traditional healers have used, including naturopathic doctors. Below is a website resource from Ben Lynch, ND about MTHFR overall, and this topic from his website, MTHFR dot net is a great example of our common way of looking at things -- you'll see below where it suggests telling your doctor about the podcast, video, MP3 file resource about thyroid disorders ands MTHFR -- the "cutting edge" research he's doing and reporting on from others as well.
PLEASE GO TO THE WEBSITE --- take the trip on the link and go see the sites as I say ..... On this one there is a very important point that is made, a question for clarification and ultimately something he'd not said exactly as he would have preferred -- which is one of the downsides of podcasts and interviews, etc. He does a marvelous job of clarifying and I think the overall comment thread speaks volumes about Dr Ben and his followers via their interaction. Looking at his responsiveness to his website's threads from commenters / users, it's very impressive, really.
As YOUsers know, I try to teach in my topics how to discern resources online to figure out who to follow, so that's one thing to always look for. Another about naturopaths overall is to know there are two camps of them, based upon the type of program they graduated from. He's a graduate of the type where you're there in person for a long time similar to going to medical or osteopathy school, you get hands on experience similarly. The other camp does more remote at home learning and then goes in person from time to time.
They're very different programs that both put N.D. after their names. Learn the difference, is my suggestion, and decide how you feel about that. On one hand, in my mind, there was such a need for educators and progressors of the information mileau out there, that it was a way to get people 'in the trenches', and we can hope that everyone finds their paths to what they are qualifed to do based on market demands. That means consumers being educated and supporting the providers in the ways they wish to support them.
There are billions of people and animals on Earth who need experts doing all kinds of things. My job at Lumigrate is to help YOUsers navigate the massive information online. The way Google works, I get a different result from searching the exact same words others do; same for YOU! Hence perhaps this is easier for me and I can provide some suggestions to at least get YOUsers started on researching various progressive / cutting edge information areas. So without further elaborations about the setup for this topic, MTHFR and Thyroid Disorders with a complete example of what you'll see if you take the trip -- to encourage YOU to go ... again, the comments there I did NOT include and am tellin' ya, there's good stuff there! MTHFR and Thyroid Disorders
Did you know that your genes are affecting your thyroid?
Whether you like it or not, genetic defects are at work in your body, directly or indirectly interfering with thyroid production. In this enlightening and informative presentation, Dr Lynch and Dr Christianson delve into an area of medicine called ‘methylation’ and ‘nutrigenomics.’
Be sure to inform your healthcare professional about this recording as they will not want to miss out on cutting edge thyroid research.
Full Video Presentation of MTHFR and Thyroid Disorders:

If you dig through the blog posts, you'll find one that is about the PDF that he's created to go with his overall presentation, so I wanted to provide the link. He asks that it be used to spread awareness and to give credit where credit is due -- to him! I hope that I have done that sufficiently here, thank you, doctor, for this well prepared and presented website rich with resources on this topic. Natural Fertility and Wellness dot com has a really good topic, I thought, about healing adrenal fatigue and finding out about her MTHFR gene mutation, changing what she was doing for supplements, and she covers beautifully, her story of learning, changing, and improving / reversing symptoms.
One of the parts I enjoyed was that she thought when she first read about MTHFR at sites about fertility issues that the people/women were really angry at the gene mutation and MTHFR was an abbreviataion for 'the MF word' you might say. This was the case with me too, when I first saw MTHFR gene mutation, I have to admit AND just yesterday someone who I was suggesting look into MTHFR commented similarly. I said that was how I remembered how to type it! HA! Gotta keep the sense of humor, always!
I've never included much about fertility and pregnancy at Lumigrate, it's just a matter of building content out from a start point and then going where the needs seem highest for our YOUsers. So I am pleased to find such a quality resource to direct people to.

Live and Learn. Learn and Live Better!! ~~ Mardy
As I frequently do, in order to showcase what is at a link that I've suggested, here is the MTFR portion of the blog topic at the link.
Enter MTHFR.
(No, that’s not an acronym for a swear word like I originally thought. I first found out about MTHFR on infertility forums years ago and I thought the ladies were just really mad at this specific gene mutation!)
Since last fall I’ve wanted to get tested for the MTHFR gene mutation, but the costs of working with my holistic DO had put that one test on the back burner until July when I finally sent in my saliva test. (I ordered it from 23andme.com* for $99.00.)
While I was waiting for the results (they take about a month) I began to do a bit more reading on the subject and found out an important little piece of information about the sublingual vitamin B supplement I was taking. Many people with certain versions of the MTHFR mutation don’t absorb or use B vitamins well, women are often times given large doses of folic acid to help sustain a pregnancy as these mutations are common in miscarriage/multiple miscarriage, so there is a lot of information out there about Vitamin B and MTHFR. But the important little part I learned while researching was that when you take sublingual vitamins you’re supposed to let it sit for at least 30 minutes under the tongue!
I had started out with maybe 10 minutes and slowly began to let it sit under my tongue less and less, down to only a minute or two.
The next day I put it under my tongue the moment the alarm went off for Todd and I went back to sleep and let it dissolve on its own. Within a week I could feel my hormones shifting. I obviously really needed this! So each morning. without fail, I made sure to take my sublingual methyl B’s* for 30-60 mintutes each time. And then I got my genetic test results from23andme.com* and ran them through Genetic Genie to get my results in a “common person can understand this” way.
Turns out I have 1 heterozygous mutation on the MTHFR C677T gene.
This means that while it’s not the “bad” variation since only one part of the gene is mutated (genes come in pairs)(some doctors don’t even consider this one an issue which is really unfortunate), that it could reduce the way my body uses B vitamins (as well as other nutrients) by 10-40 percent depending on how the rest of my genes are functioning. I also have other genetic mutations (Which is one reason I liked the 23andme.com test – it tells you all sorts of stuff!) but at this point I don’t think they are causing me problems, I’m just glad I know so I can look into it if need be.
For those that have never heard of it, here’s the basics:
MTHFR is a genetic mutation that causes the enzyme that drives a process called methylation to be reduced. This can impair the methylation cycle by approximately 15 to 80%, depending on the type and severity of the mutation.
What the methylation process does:
MTHFR associated conditions:
Within a month or so after taking my methyl Bs “properly” I finally felt great and was able to reduce and then stop taking all of my adrenal supplements within about six weeks. I began sleeping really well almost every night (with dreams again!) and began to not only have more energy (enough to finally start working out again!) but I began remembering things that I had previously forgotten to do, like pay people the money I owed them….
I don’t know exactly when my MTHFR gene became “expressed” or if it’s always been an issue for me (just because you have a gene mutation doesn’t mean it’s causing you problems), but I do know that I have a variation of it and the methyl B12 and folate* is working well for me.
So far my update ends with really great news as well. (Please stop here if you’re in a tough spot due to infertility and/or loss and need to stay away from announcements) ........
And I'll leave you to GO to the link, above to see what her good news was, or read the information about her whole thyroid and overall other experiences she went through learning and doing better for her wellness in a natural way.
It included buying one of the books I long ago suggested in the Lumigrate bookshelf forum about adrenal fatigue, which I'd given to all the providers on Lumigrate at the start of the year Lumigrate launched, 2009, as I wanted everyone to get on that sheet of music together from the team at the clinic we were initially within and going to bring the information of what we all were teaching and learning as providert to my YOUsers at Lumigrate. Things didn't work out quite as planned it was kind of like we birthed the baby (opened the clinic) and had all the ceremonies and good wishes and had great community support but the concept initially agreed upon slid and the clinic, still in existence, has nobody from the original group under the roof aside from the one who owns it.
I am always pleased, though, that my finding that book and contributing copies to the providers influenced what they knew and did with patients, and hope today that other providers in the world might be finding the information at Lumigrate intriguing and beneficial to their continued education. And naturally, consumers as well. MANY are becoming very knowledgeable and teaching others, as this blog proves. So really, take a trip and see the sites when I suggest links. I hope to find gems that otherwise YOUsers might not find!

I was fortunate to see this MD highly suggested by someone who said she'd been to competent Lyme literate medical doctors (LLMDs), but way more help came from having this MD become one of her providers. Dr Nancy Mullan does phone consultations and then it's up to someone's insurance if they have insurance, if that is covered by the insurance plan (per the woman who posted this on a thread asking about methylation pathway --- what's helped the most -- by a FB friend who is a Lyme advocate / educator / activist.

When you go, you'll see it's broken down into the thyroid (weight gain for instance) to the mental and behavioral health (and saying something about how it's not good to let these behaviors go unaddressed).

I enjoy so many of the amazing people on Facebook who have groups that are customized to their needs and learning / teaching. One is by a mother whose son has a rare form of cancer and she's basically 'doing a Lorenzo's Oil' thing. She shares a lot of things and I looked them over and saw Suzy Cohen had an article on methylation problems so I looked it over. It has a few technical and spelling glitches, capitalization and etc, she's about as accurate as I am I think. ... But from what I know of the subject matter, I think her article is a VERY good one to be used as a 'mainstay' for a newcomer to the information and it was still challenging enough to me as someone who has studied this subject a bit to keep my attention and make me really pay attention. I feel like if I had a year to devote to this subject I'd be able to speak about it as Suzy and others do, and that is just not going to be realistic so I will simply defer to those that I point to from this thread and suggest our YOUsers go hear it from the herd of horses' mouth.
Suzi Cohen, as a pharmacist, has a very unique perspective and background and I like the way she CAUTIONS on the REALLY IMPORTANT THINGS TO BE CAUTIOUS ABOUT. She says the same thing in the article I do to people --- really, we cannot do this one on our own typically, we need qualified medical providers helping us. Unfortunately, she uses the word 'doctor' and I believe there are others such as nutritionists .. and do people think of naturopaths as 'doctors', etc... So I wanted to make that point here too before you exit and go to her website should you chose to take my advise and 'go see the sites!' as I say!

There's a wave now, mid 2015, of new information on the Internet about what I'd suspected to be the case and had heard a bit from an expert I'd spoken to about the MTHFR gene mutation 'stuff' being yet another way to make money off of people and not going to the underlying issues.
That's why I have provided information such as I have about Pam Killeen's approach to addictions using nutrition, and turned people's attention toward her recommendations of doing three square meals a day, snacks for those who need them if they're more unwell still which are carefully thought out to balance out the needs of the body for a dose of nutrition. Sourdough bread if bread is what someone feels is best / good for them to be consuming, and why sourdough was part of what I learned from her.
Naturally, always getting as good quality in terms of fewer toxins and the production of the wheat plant to end product is a factor. You do your best. She said even if people eat GMO and conventional foods they'll make improvements of significance with her way. Do your best with what you got, as many don't have availability of the better products, or the funds to purchase them.
Look around for her at Lumigrate if you're interested, I've transcribed her interview on OneRadioNetwork, or highlights of it, I liked it so much what she said AND picked up the phone and called her to introduce myself personally. It confirmed why I liked her so much. I hope YOU do as well, or at least appreciate the tip of someone you might not otherwise find out about to follow (or not).
Getting the corner on the market with the branding of "'Beyond MTHFR" is Dr Rostenberg. Snazzy logo, YouTube channel created in 2012 but recently UPDATED things, added a lot of new, so this is pretty 'hot off the presses' coming to you at Lumigrate.com. Here's a link to his channel: www.youtube.com/channel/UClf8sIR9DiciZwCY89YdTeg
Well worth the time to go explore. He's very much keyed on functional medicine's premise of looking for the underlying cause. I hope you at LEAST go and watch this under 20 minute video www.youtube.com/watch
titled Physical Signs of Methylation Problems. It's been on YouTube for almost two years, in two weeks it will be two full years, and has had just over 30,000 views so far. This is what is set up there about it:
Methylation problems can be seen with the naked eye on the outside of the body. Dr. Rostenberg explains what to look for in a person for signs of methylation problems. Visit www.redmountainclinic.com for more information."
I wish they'd put more details of the words that can be thought of as keywords or search words that people will be looking with. So I will do it here:
Since this topic is an important one, let's look at what we see in a person to indicate they have a methylation problem. You can do testing, there is value in that. What's fascinating about methylation is you don't need that to figure out who has a methylation problem, you just need to know what to look for and you can see it with your naked eyes pretty much all over the place. The problem will be staring you, literally, in the face in some cases, as some of the symptoms are in the face.
It changes the symmetry of the body and significant changes to the human frame and structure.
He cites a mentor who said if you see something wrong on the outside, there's something wrong on the inside.
Epicanthal folds -- fold of tissue over the eye. You may see it more over one side than the other but it's typically on both. A 'flap' of skin that's not normal, it's an indication that the MTHFR gene SNPs are present. You can see it on TV, in magazines, in people you meet every day.
Spina bifida -- an error with the neural tube as it is closing.
Scoliosis -
Down Syndrome (they have it incorrectly as "Down's", unfortunately. - these are methylation problems that started before conception and get passed on to every cell after that. You can see the shapes of the tissues as being different as is 'average' or 'normal' for humans, so this is a great example.
Marfan's Syndrome - dent in the chest, because this indicates a boney change at the middle of the body. Give away of a methylation issue. People with this will have long, slender fingers, and a risk factor for aorta problems. You'll hear of tall athletes collapsing and dying from bursting of the aorta; so knowing about this is important. In Marfans syndrome, homocysteine is higher so this affects the aorta. So preventable with nutrition in his and others' opinions, and getting the nutrition and supplementation proper to help their wellness.
Fetal alcohol syndrome - due to alcohol affecting B9 which affects the shape of facial and cranial features. So you can see people who don't drink alcohol but have B9 deficiencies from methylation issues. B9 is so important for pregnancy. Anyone who is considering becoming pregnant should be working with nutrition beforehand (and during and after...). Always.
Cleft palate - the neural tube not closing again, is a reason for this birth defect. Things are left open and the baby keeps developing. So if you see this then you know that person and their genetic family need to be working on methylation issues.
Another Syndrome I couldn't see the name of nor catch exactly how he was pronouncing it...
Horseshoe Kidney -
Chiari malformation - cerebellum ends up down in the spinal canal. It's like spina bifida in the upper neck. Things don't develop fast enough so they don't get inside the cranium as it develops before birth. (I was surprised he did not go into other things such as Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and hypermobility ....... associated are Marfans, EDS, Chiari...... see the EDS information at Lumigrate! I put a LOT of it on the website in the fall of 2014)
Leg length discrepancy - One side of the body gets an adequate amount, the other doesn't and that's how things end up as a discrepancy. This then throws compensations into the mix and more symptoms from that.
Autism - 1:50 will be diagnosed with some form of autism. Boys experience it up to 4x that of girls, so in boys it may be 1:20 or more for boys at this time. Toxins, malnutrition, vaccinations and the toxins from that are factors for them, so they need support for detoxification and nutrition is important to that process.
Turner's syndrome - specific methylation nutrition will help them internally.
Congenital heart defects - it's an immature heart that didn't fully develop in the mother. Cell division from the methylation problems is the reason. Any kind of inadequately formed tissues mean you need to think about methylation issues in the mom and the baby.
Tongue tie - "dead ringer for methylation"he says. A problem in the middle of the body. A deviation from normal.
These with the syndromes are going to benefit from nutritional approaches that honor their genes.
Gastro __________ -- a cleft palate of the abdomen. (couldn't make it out what he was saying as the whole term) Described though: The baby grew and developed, and so did the intestines, but they developed outside the wall of the body. Anyone with a history of this will indicate a methylation problem, this one is at the center of the body. He closes nicely.
Then the way he's set things up in YouTube, it will lead you to a video about homocysteine, which you'll see here, I show people there's an UPDATED version. This takes you into BRAIN INFLAMMATION, and the methylation cycle being a key player in neurological problems and things to do with the brain and overall complex, chronic problems. Homocysteine is a key.
I felt the others on the MTHFR bandwagon were NOT doing this 'going underneath to solve there', they were just stopped at the gene mutations and detoxification pathway problems. And making money there. Pffft. So I kept going, looking for information and solutions to bring to Lumigrate's YOUsers, my clients, myself!
I'm able to be here working and helping solve the problems because I have lived this stuff my whole life and it's forty years now that I've worked activly with my diet -- diagnosed with extremely concerning blood sugar and pressure problems in my mid-teens, I wish I had this YouTube channel alone back then! And I'm able to continue my work because of the support of those who support my work. So thank you for that, if you are one who has and hopefull continues to as you are able.
When I got into the group studying about Steve Beddingfield's information and 'protocol', the consensus was that the protocol's reversal of symptoms was also reversing the underlying cause for people to have the MTHFR issues --- a very simple protocol, requiring nothing but time to study -- and energy, which means mental energy to process -- and at most $50/month for the products involved, were what captivated my attention from around New Years 2015 until it was back to school time in the summer.
The timing was such it was coinciding with a lot of deaths, seemingly from people stopping breathing for whatever reasons and I'd seen this occurring in people I have been working with. Somnolence that wasn't normal. Some drank alcohol, some did not. Then they'd not be breathing correctly, and I'd had similar things occurring which improved with the Steve Beddingfield protocol, which I did iduring the first five months of 2015. I felt I owed it to him to try it his way which was to not do any other supplements or medications and it felt to me that I was doing well with my nutrition in the body by the time I felt it was enough of the protocol and time to stop and switch it up onto other things. And work to help people find out about the information at Lumigrate about it, and how to get underway if a person wished to. So in a way, Steve Beddingfield and his group of past advisors/ helpers went beyond MTHFR and took me with them. Now there, I bring more to you for learning.
Here's what is said at the following link from Beyond MTHFR's YouTube Channel, a one of the many specific topics there, this one about homocysteine: www.youtube.com/watch titled UPDATED MTHFR and Homocysteine. You see, below, how you then learn about Methylation. Inflammation. Disease. OR Wellness (or somewhere in between, it's all a continuum, ultimately).
Do you know what is a healthy homocysteine level? Do you know why high homocysteine is such a negative for the body, esp. for the methylation cycle? These are important questions that everyone interested in healthy methylation needs to know. In this video Dr. Rostenberg shows us the roles that homocysteine and methylation play in brain inflammation. Brain and neurological health is a growing concern in our society and Alzheimer's Disease is now the 6th leading cause of death in the USA!
By studying the current peer-reviewed research, Dr. Rostenberg has discovered powerful, natural strategies to defend the brain against toxic effects of homocysteine. He can help you uncover the genetic causes of your health problem and find a natural solution! If you would like help with your methylation genetics to improve your brain function or balance your homocysteine levels, please contact Dr. Rostenberg at Red Mountain Natural Medicine today. Causes of B12 Deficiency and MTHFR Mutation is the title of the video at the following link
www.youtube.com/watch and this is the desciption information at YouTube about it:
www.DrHagmeyer.com In this video Dr Hagmeyer explains the connection B12 has with MTHFR mutations, the different kinds of B12, why B12 testing is inaccurate and most importantly whats CAUSING of your B12 deficiency. Its not enough to find out that you have a B12 deficiency, instead its imperative to find the mechanism of cause. This is what our office primary focus is. Understanding the cause of your chronic health problem. for more information visit www.DrHagmeyer.com. B12 is a critical vitamin, and he talks about people around the world not knowing what is causing their deficiencies. It's important to know the different forms of B12. The cheaply made type that is added to many foods to fortify so they can say the food has B12 in it. Lower grade / 'big box' supplements, and energy drinks often have the cheap form. And even the injections / shots can have that. You want to take the methyl version IF you have a B12 deficiency.
You're probably hearing more about MTHFR gene mutation, some think 50-70% have it, so they cannot convert the cheap, manufactured form of B12 into the useful methyl form, he includes.
You have to eat plenty of foods that contain B12 and he lists those. None of which are in the vegan diet, I might add.
Your body has to be able to absorb that, which means you need good HCL acid production in the stomach.
Antiacids, steroids, proton pump inhibitors and many other medications affect your body's ability to be absorbing B12 or other functions to do with B12.
MTHFR, what it means in simple language is a video he suggests.
Vegan and vegetarian diets. Is it possible to get B12 from vegetarian sources. The problem is that they can block the true uptake of B12. Autoimmune disorders, intestinal inflammation, h. pylori, leaky gut, high alcohol consumption, low stomach acid, pernicious anemia is an autoimmune disorder, parietal cell disorder -- these can all cause B12 deficiency. So it's important to figure out WHY. It's important to take B12 and the proper form, your focus needs to then go to the underlying cause. Live and Learn. Learn and Live Better! is my motto. I'm Mardy Ross, and I founded Lumigrate in 2008 after a career as an occupational therapist with a background in health education and environmental research program administration. Today I function as the desk clerk for short questions people have, as well as 'concierge' services offered for those who want a thorough exploration of their health history and direction to resources likely to progress their health according to their goals. Contact Us comes to me, so please do if you have questions or comments. Lumigrate is "Lighting the Path to Health and Well-Being" for increasing numbers of people. Follow us on social networking sites such as: Twitter: http://twitter.com/lumigrate and Facebook. (There is my personal page and several Lumigrate pages. For those interested in "groovy" local education and networking for those uniquely talented LumiGRATE experts located in my own back yard, "LumiGRATE Groove of the Grand Valley" is a Facebook page to join. (Many who have joined are beyond our area but like to see the Groovy information! We not only have FUN, we are learning about other providers we can be referring patients to and 'wearing a groove' to each other's doors -- or websites/home offices!) By covering some of the things we do, including case examples, it reinforces the concepts at Lumigrate.com as well as making YOU feel that you're part of a community. Which you ARE at Lumigrate!
