Recent studies on the IQ of children indicate that fluoride is a neurotoxin when consumed in high quantities: I have provided the abstracts and sources along with links to where I found them at PubMed in order to encourage people to look further if they wish. To streamline things and guide you to the most pertinent information/highlights of these abstracts, I have bolded the highlights/gems of information.

The summer of 2012, which I have called the "Summer of Love" here at Lumigrate in other articles due to our 'activism' about fluoride, began with my co-founding a group called SWIG: Safe Water is Great with the three gentlemen shown below.

In mid-May, I reached out to Grand Junction's holistic/'cranial academy' dentist, Dr Jim Kennedy/DDS (on left) and neuro- and nutrition-focused chiropractor Dr. Jeff McCloskey/DC (on right), who asked Kevin King (next to me and Jeff), a wastewater systems entrepreneur, to meet about 'doing something about' fluoride chemical still being added to the water at three of the four water plants in our area, the Grand Valley of Western Colorado.

Typical of what I have learned from our researching and educating each other first, the trend in the United States remains that the larger plants continue to add fluoride and the smaller plants sometimes never started adding it and tend to be the first to stop 'feeding it'. While about half of the plants in the US add or do not add, most people are drinking fluoride-added water from these plants serving huge numbers of people.

I have enjoyed educating people in small groups or individually as well as the thousands who have, so far, read about the various topics we have posted at Lumigrate from our perspectives and suggesting resources we turned to in our learning more about this in order to present it to people in our pursuit to 'make positive changes' related to water safety and wellness in our community and beyond.

I hope you will read ALL about what we have prepared at Lumigrate related to applying it to teeth in toothpaste or dental office procedures, or ingesting it through liquids and foods prespared with water. Just type 'fluoride' in the search box, or 'SWIG', and see the many topics by our dentist, chiropractor, medical doctor/environmental medicine specialist (Marc Spurlock, MD) and science/medical researcher and wellness expert Robin Thomas of USANA Health Sciences.  The SWIG Grand Junction's collaborative 'statement and story and photo' are a GRATE place to get the overview.

I am also reporting at Lumigrate on each step of the way, so that people elsewhere might more easily form a similar group; we are hoping to educate the community of consumers and providers and get support from the public to encourage the people make decisions about what is added at treatment plants reconsider their supplementation of our water and provide us with safe water -- that is great!  And we're having FUN doing it, as you'll see in the photos of the dinners meetings and discussions we have had this summer 2012, our 'Summer of Love".

Developmental Fluoride Neurotoxicity: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Source

Department of Environmental Health, Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, MA, USA.

Abstract

Background: Although fluoride may cause neurotoxicity in animal models, and acute fluoride poisoning causes neurotoxicity in adults, very little is known of its effects on children's neurodevelopment.

Objective: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies to investigate the effects of increased fluoride exposure and delayed neurobehavioral development.

Methods: We searched the MEDLINE, EMBASE, Water Resources Abstracts, and TOXNET databases through 2011 for eligible studies. We also searched the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database, as many studies on fluoride neurotoxicity have been published in Chinese journals only.

In total, we identified 27 eligible epidemiological studies with high and reference exposures, endpoints of IQ scores or related cognitive function measures with means and variances for the two exposure groups. We estimated the standardized mean difference (SMD) between exposed and reference groups across all studies using random effects models. We conducted sensitivity analyses restricted to studies using the same outcome assessment and having drinking water fluoride as the only exposure. Cochran test for heterogeneity between studies, Begg's funnel plot and Egger test to assess publication bias were performed. Meta-regressions to explore sources of variation in mean differences among the studies were conducted.

Results: The standardized weighted mean difference in IQ score between exposed and reference populations was -0.45 (95% CI -0.56 to -0.35) using a random-effects model. Thus, children in high fluoride areas had significantly lower IQ scores than those who lived in low fluoride areas. Subgroup and sensitivity analyses also indicated inverse associations, although the substantial heterogeneity did not appear to decrease.

Conclusions: The results support the possibility of an adverse effect of high fluoride exposure on children's neurodevelopment. Future research should include detailed individual-level information on prenatal exposure, neurobehavioral performance, and covariates for adjustment.

Fluoride and Children's Intelligence: A Meta-Analysis.

Source

Department of Pathology, Nanjing University School of Medicine, Nanjing Jinling Hospital, Nanjing, Jiangsu 210002, People's Republic of China.

Abstract

This paper presents a systematic review of the literature concerning fluoride that was carried out to investigate whether fluoride exposure increases the risk of low intelligence quotient (IQ) in China over the past 20 years. MEDLINE, SCI, and CNKI search were organized for all documents published, in English and Chinese, between 1988 and 2008 using the following keywords: fluorosis, fluoride, intelligence, and IQ.

Further search was undertaken in the website www.fluorideresearch.org because this is a professional website concerning research on fluoride. Sixteen case-control studies that assessed the development of low IQ in children who had been exposed to fluoride earlier in their life were included in this review.

A qualitative review of the studies found a consistent and strong association between the exposure to fluoride and low IQ. The meta-analyses of the case-control studies estimated that the odds ratio of IQ in endemic fluoride areas compared with nonfluoride areas or slight fluoride areas. The summarized weighted mean difference is -4.97 (95%confidence interval [CI] = -5.58 to -4.36; p < 0.01) using a fixed-effect model and -5.03 (95%CI = -6.51 to 3.55; p < 0.01) using a random-effect model, which means that children who live in a fluorosis area have five times higher odds of developing low IQ than those who live in a nonfluorosis area or a slight fluorosis area.

Live and learn.  Learn and live better! as I 'always say and sign off'.  I encourage you to find the Statement and Story/Photo of SWIG at Lumigrate, and Dr Kennedy's and Dr McCloskey's articles, as we each have focused on slightly different areas, such as fluoride and obesity/thyroid, and the HISTORY of how this came to be added to water decades ago.  This is why I say Live and Learn -- we've learned more about it in recent years and decades and so let's simply do differently now that we know better! ~~ Mardy

Fluoride's Interference with Thyroid Hormones at Hand

Some of fluoride's affect on lowering IQ can be because it interferes with the thyroid gland's use of iodine by blocking receptor sites for iodine in the formation of thyroid hormones T3 and T4. This results in lowered thyroid function - hypothyroidism.

If a pregnant woman is hypothyroid, then the child can be born with cretinism, which is a condition of severely stunted physical and mental growth due to an untreated congenital deficiency of thyroid hormones (congenital hypothyroidism), usually due to maternal hypothyroidism.

It can then be concluded that acquired hypothyroidism early in life can interfere with mental and physical development.

It Keeps Getting BETTER! NIH-Funded Harvard Study Finds Same

Another study! Dr Mercola... The Huffington Post, are covering this topic too!  www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-mercola/fluoride_b_2479833.html (Posted: 01/28/2013 11:20 am)

Harvard Study Confirms Fluoride Reduces Children's IQ

A recently-published Harvard University meta-analysis funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has concluded that children who live in areas with highly fluoridated water have "significantly lower" IQ scores than those who live in low fluoride areas.

In a 32-page report that can be downloaded free of charge from Environmental Health Perspectives, the researchers said:

A recent report from the U.S. National Research Council (NRC 2006) concluded that adverse effects of high fluoride concentrations in drinking water may be of concern and that additional research is warranted. Fluoride may cause neurotoxicity in laboratory animals, including effects on learning and memory ...

To summarize the available literature, we performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies on increased fluoride exposure in drinking water and neurodevelopmental delays. We specifically targeted studies carried out in rural China that have not been widely disseminated, thus complementing the studies that have been included in previous reviews and risk assessment reports ...

Findings from our meta-analyses of 27 studies published over 22 years suggest an inverse association between high fluoride exposure and children's intelligence ... The results suggest that fluoride may be a developmental neurotoxicant that affects brain development at exposures much below those that can cause toxicity in adults ...

Serum-fluoride concentrations associated with high intakes from drinking-water may exceed 1 mg/L, or 50 Smol/L, thus more than 1000-times the levels of some other neurotoxicants that cause neurodevelopmental damage. Supporting the plausibility of our findings, rats exposed to 1 ppm (50 Smol/L) of water-fluoride for one year showed morphological alterations in the brain and increased levels of aluminum in brain tissue compared with controls ...

In conclusion, our results support the possibility of adverse effects of fluoride exposures on children's neurodevelopment. Future research should formally evaluate dose-response relations based on individual-level measures of exposure over time, including more precise prenatal exposure assessment and more extensive standardized measures of neurobehavioral performance, in addition to improving assessment and control of potential confounders.

Studies Have Repeatedly Linked Fluoride to Reduced IQ and Brain Damage

There are so many scientific studies showing the direct, toxic effects of fluoride on your body, it's truly remarkable that it's NOT considered a scientific consensus by now. Despite the evidence against it, fluoride is still added to 70 percent of U.S. public drinking water supplies.

It amazes me that the medical (and dental) communities are so stubbornly resistant to connect the dots when it comes to the skyrocketing increase of cognitive decline in adults and behavioral issues in children (ADD, ADHD, depression and learning disabilities of all kinds). In fact, there have been more than 23 human studies and 100 animal studies linking fluoride to brain damage. Fluoride can also increasemanganese absorption, compounding problems, since manganese in drinking water has also been linked to lower IQ in children.

Reported effects of fluoride on your brain include:

• Reduction in nicotinic acetylcholine receptors
• Damage to your hippocampus
• Formation of beta-amyloid plaques (the classic brain abnormality in Alzheimer's disease)
• Reduction in lipid content
• Damage to purkinje cells
• Exacerbation of lesions induced by iodine deficiency
• Impaired antioxidant defense systems
• Increased uptake of aluminum
• Accumulation of fluoride in your pineal gland

Six Facts You Need to Know About Water Fluoridation   .... Mardy here, breaking in to say "please go to the blog at  www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-mercola/fluoride_b_2479833.html

The Lancet Neurol. Includes Fluoride as Neurotoxin. ACC responds

Fluoride was one chemical specifically addressed in this early 2014 publication in The Lancet Neurology which reports on a review performed by well established researchers. I'm ALSO providing a response / followup which has some criticality about this review.  This is a distilled version of what you will find if you go to the link in order to allow YOUsers to see what you'll be getting if you take the trip to 'see the sites', so to speak:

This is from  The Lancet Neurology, Volume 13, Issue 3, Pages 330 - 338, March 2014, by Phillippe Grandjean, MD and Philip J. Landrigan, MD.

Neurobehavioural effects of developmental toxicity

Summary

Neurodevelopmental disabilities, including autism, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia, and other cognitive impairments, affect millions of children worldwide, and some diagnoses seem to be increasing in frequency. Industrial chemicals that injure the developing brain are among the known causes for this rise in prevalence. In 2006, we did a systematic review and identified five industrial chemicals as developmental neurotoxicants: lead, methylmercury, polychlorinated biphenyls, arsenic, and toluene. Since 2006, epidemiological studies have documented six additional developmental neurotoxicants—manganese, fluoride, chlorpyrifos, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, tetrachloroethylene, and the polybrominated diphenyl ethers. We postulate that even more neurotoxicants remain undiscovered. To control the pandemic of developmental neurotoxicity, we propose a global prevention strategy. Untested chemicals should not be presumed to be safe to brain development, and chemicals in existing use and all new chemicals must therefore be tested for developmental neurotoxicity. To coordinate these efforts and to accelerate translation of science into prevention, we propose the urgent formation of a new international clearinghouse.

The American Chemistry Council's response (ACC) stats that the authors ignore fundamental principles of science, and it's 'alarmism'. I suggest you go and see what is at this link because it's an interesting 'read' what they said. I wanted to provide the link to that but provide the About information here so you can get a sense here what the ACC is and what their function is in the scheme of things. (Remember always think about what their motivations are, and that includes 'follow the money', etc.)
