The Freedom to Nosh
Hello my dawlinks! So what are the plans for July 4th? Come now, tell your Yenta. A bisl (a bit) of drinking? Nosh etvos (eat something)? Gut (good). Perhaps some shmuesing (conversation) with someone new? Very gut. A bisl ruen (a little rest) maybe? All gut things that make your Bubbe (grandmother) proud of you.
In the old country we wouldn't be able to do such things; of course in the old country July 4th was just another day. Here, there is something to bazingen (celebrate with song). Somebody had a gut idea and it came to life after much kemfn (struggle). Do you know where this is going Liblings? Let's kibbitz.
Back before your Yenta's time but a few years after the dinosaurs, some very smart men (and the exhausted women that supported them) came up with a fabulous idea to separate from Mother England and become their own country. Much like a clinging parent, I'm afraid, England's king wasn't very happy about this and basically threw a hissy fit and tantrum to go with it. He sent his troops across the ocean to "teach" those misbehaving rebels a lektsye (lesson) or two but found, though ill prepared for "adulthood", that this nation had grown up and needed a life of it's own.
I'm being kind, bubelehs. You know the story, you know how awful and long it was and the losses that were endured, the lektsyes that were learned are still being taught in other parts of the world. But I'm sure you're wondering what this has to do with us, here at Lumigrate. I'm getting to that, relax. Oy, you're in such a rush.
Upon deciding the constitution, there were things that needed to be stated; these were freedoms that had to be made clear to each person. Each person, bubbelehs, not some, not one or two, but all persons. I've been reading how many of you have been feeling discriminated against and yet have kept shvaygndik (silent) when one of the freedoms you are granted is speech. Keeping the frustration inside is a poison to your system; use your constitutional right and kibbitz!
You're body's filters can only do so much work if you don't give it the correct materials to operate. This is why you go for bloodwork to check for functions such as thyroid, liver, kidneys, etc. This is why there are experts, some of whom are here at Lumigrate, to assist you in your education. But any one of them can't do everything and none can do anything if you don't contact them.
To be honest, liblings, G-d can only give you miracles if you show HIM you can handle them. There are experts here teaching breathing and yoga and movement therapies, nutrition, hormones, supplementation of things you aren't getting or making enough of on your own. Mardy runs the show and helps people navigate who to 'go to' for information and how ultimately, YOU are the one in control of your health more than anyone.
Look how many morahs (teachers) there are here and you have the freedom to use us all...! WELL? ... Dawlinks, if you could see me, I'm tapping one foot and my arms are crossed in the typical Jewish mother fashion. How often do you hear a woman say, "take advantage of me"? Be gentle my dawlinks, I'm old.
In all this time, however, that I've invited people to write me here, very few have. On such a weekend, when you're ruening, sitting in front of your computer, let your fingers speak for you and send me a private message here at Lumigrate (use the contact us function, Mardy forwards them onto me) OR better yet, post a Comment below for others to be part of .... we create a kibbutz! Tell me your woes, get it out of your system it's time for a cleanse.
Then go have a nosh, look at you, you're too skinny! Come to my house, I'll feed you, you'll feel better. It couldn't hurt!
Your
Yenta
Mardy's Note: Above photo was taken by me in 2015, preparing vegetables for people and .... dog (O'Rio).
While it was the case in 2011 when this was written, about sending Yenta private messages at Lumigrate or commenting below on the thread, the website has had a lot of time pass without the funding to keep up with software upgrades and the IT people who do such things on complex websites such as Lumigrate. And Yenta went on her way after writing a beautiful goodbye to one of our professional contributors after he passed in 2012, so isn't available any more for such bantering. It was good while it lasted, though!
You're welcome to contact me if you wish. I'm not Jewish, I'm not a Bubbie, but I am getting into the wise old woman phase of life by this point in time (2017, nearing 2018!). Love Yenta, am always thankful for Yenta and as I was selecting this today to send the way of someone I felt inclined might appreciate it, I wanted to provide this update. You can find my contact information at the About Us tab, where I know how to update. The Contact Us... that's part of the functionality that got too 'dusty' without upgrades so that's not current information there at this time (2017).
Yenta Tellabenta is truly a 'creation' for outreach and education with Lumigrate.com through storytelling and reinforcement of key concepts related to body, mind, spirit. Written by a very talented and somewhat mysterious younger wise woman who found her way to Lumigrate the summer of 2009, we hope you enjoy having your own Yenta with us at Lumigrate! Yenta (meaning 'town gossip' or 'connector') has a dedicated Forum at Lumigrate at http://www.lumigrate.com/forums/health-issuesdis-eases/fibro... and can also be found on facebook.
This forum is provided to allow members of Lumigrate to share information and ideas. Any recommendations made by forum members regarding medical treatments, medications, or procedures are not endorsed by Lumigrate or practitioners who serve as Lumigrate's medical experts.
Yenta, this was a very good history lesson and reminder. As you've seen this spring, when someone Commented on your post about finding a new doctor and you were going to a chiropractor, it started a while "kibbutz"/stream or talking about supplements which has a very powerful impact. In just a few months, about a thousand people have read it and had the potential to follow the links out to the providers who have written and interact more with them directly. Is there a Yiddish word for 'hub'? In Internet-ese it is referred to as a 'portal'. But that's what Lumigrate is becoming and in a way, we're a Yenta -- a 'connector' (do I have my definitions somewhat correct, Yenta?).
Lumigrate's format is that of a social media site, so people ("You") can post right here -- all you have to do is sign in just as you do in facebook (after you've registered and done the user agreement, JUST like with any other site) and then you can post here where everyone can see, and send PM's/messages to anyone else who has posted something. (Again, just like facebook, but you'll not also get a message to your email, at least the way we have it set currently.) The person will see a red Inbox and # of new messages as indicator when they come back to Lumigrate that they have a new message.
Also, in order to know when there's something new in the Forums, there will be a gold star in the left hand column that is shown with a folder. That way regular users can come regularly and know 'what's new' since the last time they were in the Forums. I look many times a day to see what is new so that I can do whatever in response I think is best to do. And today, I got back from a day in the mountains and was so HAPPY to see a gold star in Yenta's forum! I always LOVE hearing your wise words.
And don't feel badly if you're not hearing from people, Yenta ... perhaps 'no news is good new' and there are MANY people, places and things holding people's attention lately, but they know we're here if and WHEN they need or want us. BUT I REALLY encourage people to post even very short Comments because the people who write feel like nobody's reading, appreciating and therefore doing more goes further down their to-do lists instead of up to the top. I know and hear all the time people say 'I liked this or that' when I talk with them but they've not indicated anything in comment so the content providers aren't getting that feedback to know they're being read and their time is educating people and is well spent. And I'm selective about who is providing content at Lumigrate and they're VERY busy people, so it's just a suggestion to YOU ALL who want content to contribute a bit of time to the process as well; it truly IS a 360/give and take, etc!
~~ Mardy
PS -- Since I referred to YOU being in the central role of health care, of Lumigrate, of society, really -- I'm going to re-post the YOU model of Lumigrate here. YOU, Yenta, reference 'you' and the empowerment piece, above as well. This made me think that Two years ago right now I was working on the presentation I gave mid July in Berkeley for the chronic pain documentary film series conference, as I took it to the insurance company executives on 07/08/09 -- I just remember that interesting date, to get their input and feedback before finalizing the presentation. I essentially spoke about the You model and the empowerment of patients. I was told it was a very good presentation and blogged about it. Let me get you that link to my blog about the presentation from July of 2009 www.lumigrate.com/blog/you-and-me-our-part-health-care-reform
Live and Learn. Learn and Live Better! is my motto. I'm Mardy Ross, and I founded Lumigrate in 2008 after a career as an occupational therapist with a background in health education and environmental research program administration. Today I function as the desk clerk for short questions people have, as well as 'concierge' services offered for those who want a thorough exploration of their health history and direction to resources likely to progress their health according to their goals. Contact Us comes to me, so please do if you have questions or comments. Lumigrate is "Lighting the Path to Health and Well-Being" for increasing numbers of people. Follow us on social networking sites such as: Twitter: http://twitter.com/lumigrate and Facebook. (There is my personal page and several Lumigrate pages. For those interested in "groovy" local education and networking for those uniquely talented LumiGRATE experts located in my own back yard, "LumiGRATE Groove of the Grand Valley" is a Facebook page to join. (Many who have joined are beyond our area but like to see the Groovy information! We not only have FUN, we are learning about other providers we can be referring patients to and 'wearing a groove' to each other's doors -- or websites/home offices!) By covering some of the things we do, including case examples, it reinforces the concepts at Lumigrate.com as well as making YOU feel that you're part of a community. Which you ARE at Lumigrate!
Bubeleh,
I looked at the website your link takes me to, it's very interesting and absolutely correct. Too many peoples break up over silly things they think are unfixable. That too becomes poisonous in many ways, not just to our bodies but to our minds, hearts and souls.
My mamen (mother) used to say, "pick your battles" and she was right. Decide what was important for you to defend and let the rest go. it's a simple way to look at things but it saves a great deal of tsores (distress) and keeps the blood pressure down. Though it's said that kibbitzing (communication) is key, sometimes that's not always the case; it's rare but there are times when being silent is the only thing one can do to stay with a mate.
I'm not a marriage counselor, dawlink, nor do I profess to be one. What works for me, may not work for you or anyone else; though Moishe and I have been married over 55 years. We are bershert (meant to be). You're answers may be in that book, they may be with a counselor, they may be in your prayers if you believe in G-d. You have that freedom to explore. Zol zayn mit mazol (good luck)!
