Online Version of The Merck Manual Home Health Handbook -- FREE and a Good Allopathic (and Expanding) Resource
I learned of The Merck Manual when I was at Colorado State University; I don't recall if I saw it as a recommended text book when looking around the bookstore when I was taking one class at a time while working for the University, or when I was finally 'in' the occupational therapy program, but I will tell you that my hard covered copy of it was my greatest resource once I was an occupational therapist. You'd get a patient's chart with all the notes from the physicians and others who saw the patient prior to their getting to you, and there was a lot to learn about all the conditions and treatments of the 1990s.
I've recently purchased a paper copy of the professional edition but was pleased to see that Merck offers a FREE online version of the home edition, it's really my favorite as they tell you the highlights and strip out the detail that's over most people's heads (including mine, sometimes, remember I'm a hybrid of consumer and provider, and hopefully can commiserate with how difficult it is for people to find quality information that is streamlined and easy to use for the 'average proactive patient/consumer').
I am posting the link here for your 'attention', and I encourage you to go and look around, see if it's a resource for you to have 'on hand' and know that it's right here on the Lumigrate Bookshelf if and when you need it. (Along with our many, many other topics from our many experts.)
I hope that it is as much of a benefit to you as it has been and continues to be, to me. I noticed that they are respectful of all the herbs and supplements that consumers are increasingly utilizing, and have a section about that in their professional edition; it clearly is presenting problems for providers because there are significant interactions that are contraindicated between pharmaceuticals and natural medicines/ chemicals that are found in nature and are not patented and 'studied' in order to get approval to be on the market.
NOTE: There is a pronunciation guide and there are anatomical charts and really great visual resources for people to utilize, again, FREE at right at your fingertips via the Internet and your gadget/device.
Live and Learn. Learn and Live Better! ~~ Mardy (And for once, I can report that there's something I went into the medical field 'with' that I still think is valid and useful! You don't hear me saying that so much as "I have learned so much from my experiences that have me outside of 'the box' -- so here's one from 'inside the box')
Live and Learn. Learn and Live Better! is my motto. I'm Mardy Ross, and I founded Lumigrate in 2008 after a career as an occupational therapist with a background in health education and environmental research program administration. Today I function as the desk clerk for short questions people have, as well as 'concierge' services offered for those who want a thorough exploration of their health history and direction to resources likely to progress their health according to their goals. Contact Us comes to me, so please do if you have questions or comments. Lumigrate is "Lighting the Path to Health and Well-Being" for increasing numbers of people. Follow us on social networking sites such as: Twitter: http://twitter.com/lumigrate and Facebook. (There is my personal page and several Lumigrate pages. For those interested in "groovy" local education and networking for those uniquely talented LumiGRATE experts located in my own back yard, "LumiGRATE Groove of the Grand Valley" is a Facebook page to join. (Many who have joined are beyond our area but like to see the Groovy information! We not only have FUN, we are learning about other providers we can be referring patients to and 'wearing a groove' to each other's doors -- or websites/home offices!)
