Depression has many causes.  People often have stressors on their body/mind/spirit which leads the brain to have different chemicals in it: everything from poor nutrition in the foods consumed to not getting exercise and laughter regularly, even enough hugs! Often, people have been prescribed and might prefer 'give me a pill to solve my problem' rather than finding and correcting the underlying reasons.  Often medications are necessary and helpful, hopefully for a short time while the underlying causes start to be investigated.

So it's not a suprise to read the information at this topic at AARP, but it was a suprise that AARP had such an excellent piece in terms of including alternatives -- supplements, herbs and the more powerful drugs which are prescribed and sold by pharmacies to millions of people every month in the US and beyond.  I hope that if you're one or a person 'with a brain' you want to treat well, you follow the link.  Below the line I am going to transfer just a bit of the information so you can see if it's something you want to read more/all of.

10 Types of Medications That Can Make You Feel Depressed

Here's a checklist of drugs to watch out for

En español | Researchers have long known that many drugs can make us feel down or even depressed and that, as we age, our changing body chemistries put us at a greater risk for this side effect. But few doctors think to review the medications list when their patients have the telltale symptoms of depression: lack of energy, listlessness, feeling rundown, excessive fatigue, changes in appetite and sleeping patterns, sadness, despair. As a result, they often layer on top of the drugs causing those symptoms a new drug, such as an antidepressant, for treating them, which may in turn trigger additional side effects.
