I wanted to stop by Lumigrate and briefly introduce myself today, as we're recording our first podcast today related to my history with Mardy in treating patients with head injury and other neurologic issues, which lead to a flow of people with fibromyalgia and inspired us to collaborate on creating something that was named by the participants in Grand Junction 'Fibromyalgia Forum'. We plan to also record something about how that lead to my revitalized interest in the work of Dr. Bruce Perry, a neurologist focusing on the connection between adverse experiences in childhood and chronic illness in adulthood. Last summer (2009), I presented to the Colorado Osteopathic Association's conference on adverse childhood experience and chronic pain.
I look forward to writing more here in the Forums at Lumigrate, as well as media such as podcasts and video when appropriate and possible.
Dr Chris Young is a licensed clinical psychologist trained in behavioral medicine, neuropsychology, and psychotherapy. Thanks Dr Young/Chris. I think Adam was pleased with how it went -- I was totally surprised that he wanted me to do the 'facilitating' and I'm glad you had a good time and we were able to work it all in on your lunch hour. As I said in our discussion yesterday which we'll be getting 'up on Lumigrate' and letting everyone know how to listen to it when it's edited and posted, you were the medical provider and colleague in your building, where I used to see patients for OT, that really changed the direction of my business and career and when we collaborated and formed the Fibro Forum and I could see how many people WANTED the information but weren't able to be there to get it -- and Lumigrate ended up years later being the result. (For those who weren't there, it was too hot or too cold or to bright or too dark, or they were too ill or so well they were out doing something FUN, or they were a professional and busy seeing the full docket of patients required in order to just pay your bills anymore and keep the doors open and lights on to be able to practice your profession.)
I look forward to returning to the podcast studio again REAL SOON and maybe telling Adam about what we did that was successful and what we found that were the problems so that other education groups around the country might form or take our information to benefit them. I know that the social worker on Lumigrate who writes here in the Fibromyalgia area, Aimee Shannon (link to her Forum provided, below), has always been very interested in what I've told her about our groups and she's really tearing up her portion of Ohio with the 'support groups' she has, but I think she's more inclined to be doing education groups and everyone just presumes the word 'support' is the preferred word. I found it really interesting when you and I were inviting our patients who had done well with fibromyalgia to help us formulate a group, they would NOT come if it was a 'support group' and they were very unhappy with previous ones they had been to. That's probably because the fibromyalgia population is a very 'difficult to manage' group, and there ARE reasons for that, which you helped me to understand, and I'd really appreciate getting your voice and expertise involved in getting that information out so others can navigate in the most beneficial way. Because truly, when you come down to the end of the day, those of us who are working SO hard in our professional capacities --- at least all the ones I am affiliated with -- are doing it because they truly want to affect change on the situations they have the capacity to affect. And you definitely are in that 'pod'.
Again, thank you for taking the time to help advance Lumigrate and people with fibromyalgia who are seeking quality, progressive information in order to help themselves or others.
