For some reason, I was extremely hypoglycemic as a teenager, and it seemed to improve as I got into my 20s. I was told it was 'prediabetic hypoglycemia' and that I'd likely be a diabetic when I was an adult. Well, I seemed to have less problems with dizziness when standing the older I got and thought that was just great. But I had a long glucose tolerance test done at about age 40 and my insulin was kicking in a bit slower than it should. Well, that scared me and at that time my thyroid was still not being tested correctly and I didn't know to ask the doctor to test any differently (see Scott Rollins' seminar on hypothyroidism). Anyway, it all seemed to get back to normal in the past few years ... I'm doing bio-identicals and have my thyroid condition treated, as well as working on building up adrenals (adrenal fatigue is an interesting condition and I have a great book I'd like to set up to be recommended somewhere on the site). I even learned a neat trick that waking up early in the morning is frequently from low blood sugar so doing a protein snack at bedtime can alleviate that. And it works for me!
I'm interested to see how you all use this area of the website. It's intended to be a positive place for people to share, and for the providers to check in as well. So I'll check back --- I'm going to go get a snack now. Mardy

I recently found out that I am hypoglycemic, and now that I know more about it, I realized that I probably always have been. It's just been getting worse over the past year. I'm finding that I must eat (healthy) every 2-3 hours and that is helping a lot! I, too, am on bio-identical hormones, being treated for low thyroid and for adrenal fatigue. The more I read the more I see that it's all interrelated. But I must say that most traditional doctors do not properly test or treat these conditions. I had to do my own research and go to a lot of doctors until I finally found a clinic that practices functional medicine and they do know how to test and treat these conditions. Thank you for this website to get the word out to others! People need to know they don't have to feel bad. Everyone should feel FANTASTIC and if they don't they must seek until they find the reason why they do not. Holly
Thanks Holly --- your contribution by writing here will be helpful to others who will stop by as they are somewhere in their learning (and teaching) process. It seems so funny that something as simple as blood sugar is overlooked but when I have thought about it, I don't think they routinely screen for that when you go for a checkup. Mine was going to 37 on the five your tolerance test when I was 15! And at age 40 it was up at the diabetic range and I was having to initiate the requests for the testing. Then somewhere in there I had a doctor about the time I was 30 who insisted there was NO such thing as hypoglycemia. Theories and everything I guess sways around a bit but I really DO hope many, many people learn about the adrenal, pituitary, hypothalamus 'stuff' and the other hormone cascade issues that can follow and we get ourselves all turned around up and up to 'Fantastic' as you said! OR not just great but Lumigrate as I say! Mardy

I was diagnosed with reactive hypoglycemia in my pre-teens but either I manage it really well, or I don't have it anymore? I was told you could grow out of it, so I don't know. My Dr. a while back gave me a glucose meeter and some test strips so I could test my blood to see how low it dropped when I would get hungry, ( the lowest it got was 72) If I get really hungry I get cranky and as my husband says I loose my head. When I get to that point I don't care about anything as long as I get food. I get weak and shaky. When I was younger I would get dizzy and pass out from it. That hasn't happened since I was 17, and I'm 26 now. I don't get overly hungry either but I always have protein on hand in case shopping or school takes longer then I plan. I also don't eat any sugar unless I have had a meal with a good source of protein.
My past few fasting blood tests haven't indicated any signs of hypoglycemia either, so I guess thats good!
I was diagnosed with hypoglycemia when I was 17 and have had it ever since. I get dizzy and feel so weak if I don't eat regularly. When I worked I used to spend many hours interviewing people without a break. I found that having a banana on hand and having a cup of tea (with milk) would perk me up enough to get through but it wouldn't be something I would be able to do very often.
The doctors here in Ireland are a bit lacking when it comes to proper testing. I had to go to Northern Ireland (UK) to be diagnosed with Fibromyalgia (my gp in Dublin wasn't really interested in giving me anything else other than Anti-depressants). I did have my thyroid tested back then but the doc said it was clear.
I've only ever passed out twice from it and I'm not sure many people understand who serious it can affect you. When I tell people I'm hypoglycemic they just shrug and say "yeah" but when you actually pass out then they really realise that you NEED to look after yourself! lol
I have Fibro and RA :)
